Tanya – Homeless/ Loom band maker

How long have you been homeless?
Coming up to 8 or 9 months.
What’s the biggest challenge for you right now?
Trying to stay on my own and get a roof over my head every night. It’s a bit easier when a few of the other girls chuck in with us but it’s hard to know who to trust. My phone’s been missing a few times and I’ve had to get a new one. Yeah but just getting that roof with a door to lock is the hardest thing really. Also getting people to say yes to job offers, I am Christian and honest so I always tell them my situation. They don’t like to here someone say they’re homeless. They are worries about hygiene and reliability… Although I am, they don’t know that.
Do you take drugs?
Only coffee. I’m only addicted to coffee.
What inspires you?
The lord. I can’t give up… If I do, where will I be? What will I have?
You make loom-bands, do you enjoy doing that?
I do. It keeps me busy and keeps me from being depressed. It keeps colour in my life.
If you don’t mind me asking, how much do you make in a day from the loom bands?
My rough number is about 50 to 60, some days it’s 15 or 20 and that buys me dinner. People drop off food and coffees in the day which saves me money which is nice.
In your ideal world, where do you want to be a year from now?
Hopefully not here. I would love to finish my course in Business and Management. My dream is to run my own ice cream shop. To own my own cows  to have my own milk and to grow my own fruit. Once I get the diploma on my resume it will help a lot.
